Mike joined from Wigan St Patrick’s in June 1982, and quickly established himself in the first team, collecting a Lancashire Cup winners’ medal against St Helens in only his tenth appearance. An eighteen year-old Gregory made an enthusiastic try-scoring debut against Huyton, in a 43-5 victory at Wilderspool, who impressed his team-mates and the fans with his tackling.
Gregory was part of the team that won the 1986 Premiership Final, against Halifax. Mike led Warrington to victory over Oldham in the 1989 Lancashire Cup Final. He was also captain in the 1990 Challenge Cup Final loss to Wigan at Wembley.
The first of Gregory’s 20 Great Britain caps, the most for a Warrington player, was against France in 1987. Mike became a double Tourist with Great Britain, in 1988 and 1990. On the first he scored a memorable long range try in the third test victory over Australia and Sydney. He was captain of the 1990 tour and led his country to a series victory over New Zealand.
Mike spent much of his final years at Warrington on the treatment table, before a move to Salford. He moved into coaching at St Helens, followed by head coach roles at Swinton and Wigan, before being struck down with a debilitating illness.
Great players produce brilliant performances when it matters most and Mike Gregory could be relied upon to do just that for both Warrington and Great Britain.
