Arthur
Skelhorn signed for Warrington
in 1911 from local junior side Stockton Heath.He received a signing on fee of £ 5 and so did his amateur club.It proved to be money well spent.
He
played at prop in the Warrington side defeated
by the Huddersfield team of “All Stars”, 5-9
in the 1913 Challenge Cup Final.This
proved to be the only final of his long career.
Skelhorn
was selected for the 1920 tour of Australia along with fellow prop
Billy Cunliffe.They formed part of a
formidable Great Britain
front row that was much feared by the Australians.Arthur was on the winning side six times out
of seven against the Aussies playing for Great
Britain, England,
Lancashire and Warrington.
Arthur
was a versatile forward who played every position in the pack.As a loose forward in the 1920/21 season he
finished as the Club’s leading try scorer with 10.From 1919/20 to 1921/22 he regularly was
selected for representative honours, winning 7 Great
Britain caps, 3 England
caps and made 6 appearances for Lancashire.
Arthur
was made captain for his final season 1924/25 before his retirement.He scored a try in his last match, a 23-11
victory over Huddersfield at Wilderspool.
