John Bevan was already a Welsh rugby union
international and British Lion winger when he signed for Warrington in 1973.He went on to have 13 successful years at
Wilderspool as the swashbuckling hero for a generation of Warrington fans.His trade mark clenched-fist salute at
scoring a try started at Leigh on Boxing Day 1973.
Bevan’s first season was a dream for Warrington as they won the Captain Morgan
Trophy, the Player’s No.6 Trophy, the Challenge Cup and the Club Merit Trophy.He went on to play in a further 8 finals,
winning the John Player Trophy and Lancashire Cup twice each, whilst being on
the losing side in Challenge Cup, Premiership, John Player and Floodlit finals.
He went on the 1974 tour of Australian and won 6 Great Britain
caps scoring 5 tries.Bevan had to
withdraw from the 1979 tour party through injury.He also scored 5 tries in 17 appearances for Wales, the last
4 as captain.
Bevan’s power, speed and energy to be involved saw
him regularly in the centre or at loose forward as his career developed.His 201 tries makes him third on Warrington’s all time try
scoring list being the two wing legends Brian
Bevan and Jack Fish
He fitted well into Warrington and became a teacher, many a local
child has happy memories of being taught by Mr Bevan !
Sleeves rolled up, socks down to his ankles, clenched
fist in celebration and a smile on his face, that’s John Bevan.
