Top of the Table Clash

The last top of the table clash between Warrington and Wigan was on 2nd January 1994 at Wilderspool Stadium.  The match was heading for a 6-6 draw when referee Russell Smith first penalised Warrington for foul play by Paul Cullen and then against Jonathan Davies for talking back.  This allowed Frano Botica the opportunity to kick a long range penalty, which he duly converted to give Wigan an 8-6 victory.

Mark Forster scored the Warrington try and Davies (pictured) kicked a goal.  Martin Offiah scored Wigan’s try and Botica kicked two goals.

That lost point ultimately cost Warrington the league title as Wigan, Bradford and Warrington all finished the season level on points.  Wigan winning the title with the best points difference.

That Wilderspool thriller was watched by a full house of 11,397 spectators, the final time a gate of over 10,000 watched a match at Wilderspool.
